Conquer the Peaks: Hiking
2.5 to 4 hours per hike
Explore the island's spectacular interior. Choose from the UNESCO Le Morne Brabant, Black River Peak, Tamarind Falls (7 Waterfalls) or Le Pouce Mountain.
Le Morne Brabant (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Standing as a sentinel on the southwestern peninsula, Le Morne Brabant is perhaps the island's most iconic peak. Beyond its striking silhouette against the turquoise lagoon, it holds profound historical significance as a former refuge for runaway slaves (maroons). The hike is a mix of shaded woodland paths and steep rocky scrambles, culminating in a summit view that overlooks the famous "underwater waterfall" illusion in the sea below.
Black River Peak (Piton de la Petite Riviรจre Noire)
As the highest point in Mauritius, reaching an elevation of 828 meters, Black River Peak is the ultimate destination for those looking to stand on the roof of the island. Located within the Black River Gorges National Park, the trail winds through endemic high-altitude flora. On a clear day, the summit offers a 360-degree vista that spans from the southern cliffs to the rolling green hills of the interior.
Tamarind Falls (The 7 Waterfalls)
While not a single peak, this canyoned descent near Henrietta is a vertical masterpiece of Mauritian geography. The area features a series of seven distinct cascades tumbling down a deep, verdant gorge. Navigating the "peaks" and ridges around these falls allows visitors to experience the islandโs hydraulic power and dense rainforest heart, providing several natural viewpoints that look out over the west coast.
